Teams from Brighton and Hove High School, The Towers and Shoreham College went head to head last week, in the 2015 Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition.
Fascinating, thought-provoking speeches were delivered by all three teams, with the Towers exploring body image in their presentation Skin Deep, and Brighton and Hove High School students discussing whether marriage is an outdated institution in today’s society.
The competition was intense with well-matched teams. After a nail-biting period of deliberation, the esteemed adjudicators announced that Shoreham College, the host team, had clinched victory with their “stand out” performance, exploring Gender Identity.
The winning team comprised of Year 11 students Alasdair and Maddy, with passionate Year 10 pupil, Erin, delivering some bold and challenging material on the gender spectrum. The chair of the adjudicating team, Katy Bourne, commented it was a speech that would definitely stay with her.
In addition to being the winning school team, Erin was awarded the individual prize for best main speaker.
Shoreham College will now go through to the District round of the competition, where they will face other Sussex schools, in February.
